A suspected head gasket failure often leads to one urgent question: should you repair the existing engine or replace it? The correct answer depends less on the gasket price than on the engine’s condition, the cause of failure and the total cost of returning the vehicle to reliable service.
Repair is often reasonable when
- The engine was shut down quickly and did not suffer prolonged overheating.
- The block and cylinder head are crack-free and can be restored within specification.
- Oil pressure, compression and cylinder condition were otherwise healthy.
- The vehicle is in good condition and worth keeping.
- The correct gasket set, fasteners and machine services are available.
Replacement deserves consideration when
