7 Signs of a Blown Head Gasket You Should Never Ignore
A head gasket creates a seal between the engine block and cylinder head. It helps keep combustion pressure, coolant and engine oil in their proper passages. When that seal begins to fail, a small leak can become an overheating event, a damaged cylinder head or a much larger engine repair.
No single symptom proves that a head gasket has failed. However, several symptoms appearing together are a strong reason to stop driving and test the engine.
1. Persistent white exhaust smoke
A light cloud on a cold morning may be normal condensation. Thick white vapor that continues after the engine reaches operating temperature can indicate coolant entering a combustion chamber. A sweet odor at the exhaust makes coolant intrusion more likely.
2. Coolant loss with no visible external leak
If the coolant level repeatedly drops but the radiator, hoses, water pump and reservoir remain dry, coolant may be leaking internally. Never open a hot cooling system. Let the engine cool completely before checking the reservoir or radiator.
3. Repeated overheating
Combustion gases entering the cooling system can create air pockets and reduce circulation. Overheating can also warp the cylinder head, so continuing to drive may turn a gasket job into a machining or engine-replacement job. Shut the engine down safely if the temperature warning appears.
4. Bubbles in the coolant reservoir
Continuous bubbling after a proper cold start may indicate combustion pressure entering the cooling system. Some movement is normal, and trapped air after service can look similar. A cooling-system pressure test or combustion-leak test can separate a true leak from ordinary circulation.
5. Milky residue in the oil
Coolant mixed with oil can create a tan or milky appearance under the oil cap or on the dipstick. Short trips in cold weather may also cause condensation under the cap, so inspect the oil itself and consider a professional diagnosis. Contaminated oil cannot protect bearings correctly.
6. Rough running, misfires or hard starting
A leaking cylinder may lose compression or collect coolant while parked. The result can be a rough cold start, a misfire code or uneven power. Spark plug condition, compression testing and leak-down testing help identify the affected cylinder.
7. Oil or coolant leaking at the head-to-block seam
An external leak near the cylinder head may come from the head gasket, but valve-cover, intake-manifold and timing-cover leaks can travel and look similar. Clean the area and verify the source before ordering parts.
